Ryan: Apple event 20/10/10

Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs unveiled a lighter MacBook Air laptop and a version of the Macintosh operating system called Lion, saying he was drawing inspiration from Apple’s touch-screen mobile devices.

Macs will soon have an application store, similar to the App Store for the iPhone and iPad, Jobs said today at an event at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. New computers also will take better advantage of multitouch gestures on track pads, mimicking the interface on Apple’s iOS, which runs mobile products. The app store will open within 90 days, and Lion will be released in the summer of 2011.

“We’ve been inspired by some of the work we’ve done on iOS, and want to bring them back to the Mac,” Jobs said.

Apple is using the popularity of its iPhone and iPad tablet to bolster demand for its oldest product, the Macintosh. Sales of the computers rose 22 percent to $4.87 billion last quarter, making up 24 percent of revenue. More than half of Mac purchases in the company’s retail stores in the most recent period were from first-time buyers.

“I don’t hear enough people talking about the halo effect,” said Colin Gillis, an analyst at BGC Partners LP in New York. He recommends buying the stock. “As more customers are being exposed to Apple products, they are spending more of their computer dollars on Apple.”

‘Hooking Up’

The new MacBook Air, which is 0.68 of an inch (less than 2 centimeters) at its thickest point, combines features of the iPad with a notebook, Jobs said. The computer’s battery lets users surf the Web wirelessly for seven hours. In standby mode, the battery can last 30 days. Like the iPad, there’s no hard- disk drive or CD-ROM, just flash memory. It weighs 2.3 to 2.9 pounds, depending on the model.

“We asked ourselves, ‘What would happen if a MacBook and an iPad hooked up?’ Well, this is the result,” he said. “We think it’s the future of notebooks.”

The new Air comes in two versions: a 13.3-inch model costs $1,299 to $1,599, depending on the amount of memory, while the 11.6-inch product starts at $999.

Apple sold a record 3.89 million Macs in the fourth quarter, a 27 percent increase from last year. The gains helped Apple nudge aside Acer Inc. to become the No. 3 U.S. PC seller in the period that ended in September, behind Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc., according to Framingham, Massachusetts-based IDC. Apple’s best-selling product is the iPhone.

‘Incredible Momentum’

The Mac has gained market share for 18 straight quarters and now has an installed base of almost 50 million, Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said at the event.

“It’s incredible momentum,” he said.

Apple’s retail stores had 75 million visitors in the past fiscal year, which ended in September, Cook said. Its Chinese stores, which opened in the past two years, are drawing the heaviest traffic, he said.

The company also introduced a new version of its media software, iLife 11. The update adds features for handling video, photos and music, and is more tightly integrated with Facebook. The collection of programs includes iPhoto, which now makes it easier to e-mail photos and turn pictures into books and cards.

Ryan : Orange and T-Mobile merge networks UK but only 2G so far

Customers of Orange and T-Mobile will soon be able to hop between the two mobile networks.

The deal is one of the first practical benefits from the recent merger of the two firms, which have 30 million customers combined.

The network sharing deal is limited to 2G signals, meaning that customers will see little benefit when using the mobile web.

Analysts said that T-Mobile had the most to gain from the merger.

"Outside of the South-East [of England] there has been a constant perception that T-Mobile is an under performing network," said Shaun Collins of research firm CCS Insight.

"This literally takes it away overnight."

Network evolution

He said that network coverage was becoming a "key battleground" between the major UK networks.

"The network coverage advantages of the merger [between Orange and T-Mobile] were always the most important part of it," he said.

Customers of the two firms will have to sign up for the free "roaming" service, which goes live on 5 October.

Once registered, their phone will automatically hop between the networks when it loses signal. The underlying system is similar to that used when a phone "roams" on a different network abroad.

Next year Everything Everywhere - the company that runs Orange and T-Mobile in the UK - said that phones would automatically switch to whichever of the two networks has the strongest signal mid-call.

It said it also plans to roll it out to 3G services.

When it does, Orange customers will be able to use a 3G network owned and operated by Mobile Broadband Network Limited (MBNL), a joint venture company owned by Three and T-Mobile.

Orange joined MBNL on the 16 August.

"Everything Everywhere will be adding Orange sites to the network it shares with Three in the course of time, and Three customers will get access to a significant proportion of those as they are added," said a spokesperson for Everything Everywhere.

Three customers are already able to use the Orange network for 2G calls and texts.

Further down the line, Everything Everywhere aims to start building a next-generation LTE (long-term evolution) mobile network, to cope with the surge in demand for data and the mobile web.

LTE offers faster speeds than current 3G networks and is able to handle more traffic.

The UK government plans to hold an auction of spectrum for next generation services in 2011.

It enables users to scroll smoothly up and down a page with inertial scrolling, pinch to zoom in and out, rotate an image with fingertips and swipe three fingers to flip through a collection of Web pages or photos. pple first brought multi-touch functionality to its desktops last year with the Magic Mouse, a Bluetooth wireless mouse that allows users to use their fingers to scroll and zoom via the surface of the hardware. Every iMac and Mac Pro comes with the Magic Mouse, though users can now order the new Magic Trackpad for $69 as an option.

Andrew: New Kindles

The front page of Amazon.co.uk currently sports a letter from founder Jeff Bezos advertising two new Kindle e-Readers, both of which are finally now available directly from the UK store and US Store. Previously, the Kindle could only be ordered from the US store, and users would have buy content for the Kindle from it in dollars. The two new Kindles however are available directly from Amazon.co.uk.

dedicated UK Kindle store will be appearing on 27 August, mazon said and will offer more than 400,000 books, as well as UK newspapers, magazines and blogs.

Both new Kindles are available to pre-order now and will ship on 27 August. The new Kindles cost £149($189) for a 3G and Wi-Fi version, or its £109($139) for a Wi-Fi only variant. Visually both new Kindles look the same and both are only 247g, a 15 per cent weight reduction from the 290g of the Kindle 2. This is down to it having a 21 per cent smaller body. Despite this it keeps the same 6in display as the Kindle 2.

Amazon said that the new screen offers a 50 per cent superior contrast to any other e-reader and thanks to what it described as “Amazon’s proprietary waveform and font technology”, it now has faster page turns and clearer fonts. A browser has been added, based on the WebKit rendering engine and it also has double the storage. The battery is said to last for one month.

The 3G Whispernet service on the 3G enabled model will be available worldwide in over 100 countries and is free at all times, enabling you to download and start reading a book in 60 seconds.

Andrew: The Apple Magically Pad!

Apple magic trackpad by Apple is multi-touch pad through a smooth glass and aluminum design. It enables users to scroll smoothly up and down a page with inertial scrolling, pinch to zoom in and out, rotate an image with fingertips and swipe three fingers to flip through a collection of Web pages or photos. Apple first brought multi-touch functionality to its desktops last year with the Magic Mouse, a Bluetooth wireless mouse that allows users to use their fingers to scroll and zoom via the surface of the hardware. In conjunction with the magic trackpad you can use a magic mouse

All these wireless product will need a batteries? Yes you are so correct you can purchase the Apple battery charge which come with 6 high duty batteries so that means
If you've used a MacBook Pro or MacBook over the last couple of years then what we'll be looking at in this review of the Apple Magic Trackpad is old news. We say that because the technology is the same, the experience is the same, and the usability is the same; anything you can do on the trackpads of the latest MacBook or MacBook Pro laptop range, you can do here. So do you really need to buy this £59 accessory? You need to answer that yourself

My Final Decision

So desktop users should you ditch your mouse? The mouse might be ugly but it will allow you to whizz around the desktop quickly and it is what you are used to. This brings with it a host of new functions and we feel it is better than the company's Magic Mouse offering. At £59 you really want to make sure this is magical enough to replace your current mouse and we would have to say this comes down to how much you enjoy using a trackpad. For MacBook users wanting to bring that touch experience to their desktop Mac, or if dock your MacBook at your desk, then you probably don't need convincing. For us, this gives you the chance to break the excellent touchpad experience out of your notebook and get it on your desk.

Ryan: The Apple iPhone4 Antenna - A must read!

Over the past week i have been studying the iPhone4 antenna problem that has made headlines all over the world and i want to show you the true story. Before i begin i want you to remember that in the eyes of reporters bad news is the best news!

I brought an iPhone4 on the 24th of June from my local Carphone Warehouse store in the UK and upgraded my existing 3GS on the O2 network, from this day i have had great success with the iPhone4 and have found it hard to understand what all the "bad press" was about?

So in the last 48 hours i have started to dig more into this and have found some interesting stuff about the so called "fault" Through my social media connections (YouTube/Twitter) i emailed 50 iphone4 users from the UK and the USA and questioned them about there experiance. before i share my findings i wanted to just show you a clip from an article posted by PC World's Mike Keller -

"
I have an iPhone 4. Generally speaking, reception and call quality far exceeds that of my old 3G. In my own tests, administering the "death grip" (which I will note is a fairly unnatural way to hold the phone, in my opinion) without a case does in fact make bars drop, though it doesn't actually seem to make it less likely to be able to make or sustain a call. Consistent with reports, bars aren't dropped while using a case (I have a Bumper)"

I have also produced my own video around this "death grip" which is an eyeopener -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwxQiGFqrpA

Now the data i collected from the 50 people in the UK and USA suggested some strange patterns that have been confirmed in other reports online. Only 1 of the 25 people i asked in the UK found a change in connection when using the phone on a day to day basis with a normal grip (this increased if the tight unnatural death grip is used) where as interestingly 5 of the 25 people i asked in the USA found a change with a normal grip! In the UK Apple has more that one partner for the iPhone meaning this 25 people used a mix of services where as in the USA AT&T are the sole partner and they have been know in recent months for service issues, The question here is are Apple truly to blame for this?

I would like to also point out another article that i have read online that i think hits the spot! -
http://www.pcworld.com/article/200453/antenna_expert_apple_is_right_iphone_4_signal_woes_overblown.html

My conclusion to this is that it feels like the reporters from Gizmodo, the BBC, GSM arena and others smell blood and are out for what they can get and that this would not be happening if it was not the iPhone. These reporters have made me lose respect for the news industry. Apple themselves have shown that all smart phones have this "fault" and i have also shown that in the above video, but is this really a fault? my experience has been great as has the vast majority of people i have spoken to.

Apple has now issued FREE cases to all iPhone4 customers and this seems to stop any problems the small amount of people are having.

Every phone in the world is the best phone in the world to someone, don't become a hater of any product as this shows that you feel this product is a threat to your way of life

To Finish -

1. If you don't like the iPhone don't buy it!
2. If you have brought it and don't like it return it!
3. Understand this is not unique to the iPhone

Ryan: Apple to offer FREE iPhone4 cases

What will the haters do now?

Apple is offering a free case to every owner of the iPhone4.

Apple boss Steve Jobs unveiled the offer at a press conference called to tackle the ongoing speculation about the iPhone4's suspected antenna problem.

The case will help overcome a widely reported issue in which phone signal strength was drained when the phone was held a certain way.

Declaring "We're not perfect", Mr Jobs said reception problems were "endemic" throughout the smartphone industry.

To get their free case, owners will be able to apply via the Apple website from 22 July. Mr Jobs said Apple could not make enough for all owners of the phone but would source a supply and offer a range of cases.

Based on retail prices of iPhone cases, supplying one to all three million customers could cost Apple about $180m (£118m).

Mr Jobs also extended an offer to iPhone4 users to give them a full refund if they were still unhappy with the handset's performance. This offer will be available until 30 September.

As you may have seen I produced a video regarding this "Fault" and showed that it was extremely minor and that the media/haters had blown it way out of proportion, But despite this Apple have decided to react and offer a solution to this intermittent problem.

Ryan: iPhone4 let's get down to it.

Ok so the world and his dog have brought the iPhone4, the haters have said there piece. Now let get down to it and test this bad boy!

Here we have a video that tests the video capabilities of the iPhone -

We test it in a cool way! Incorporating different light conditions and object speed! We think it's a great video so please shout about it!

Ryan: iPhone4 signal problems?

My experience of the "iPhone signal problem" has be a whole load of nothing! You have to hold the phone HARD in a certain way to get it to do anything! Yes you would hold the phone in that way when you make calls but I sure no one would ever hold it that hard! But here is a section from a recent blog post found on Engaget which make sense -

"Spencer Webb runs AntennaSys, a company that designs tailormade RF solutions, and has himself worked on making quad-band transceivers for AT&T. As he tells it, almost all phone makers have now transitioned to locating their antennae at the bottom of the phones. This has been in order to move radio wave emissions away from the head (a shortcoming that a top-mounted aerial would incur), which the FCC has been quite demanding about with its SAR standards --
The iPhone 4, however, moved the antenna action from the back of the phone to the sides. This probably improves the isotropy of the radiation pattern, but only when the phone is suspended magically in air.
Another great point made here is that testing done both by the Federales and mobile carriers might include the head, but never accounts for the presence of the person's hand. Thus, although a phone's antenna could test very well, it might suffer from such issues as those experienced with the iPhone 4. Mind you, this still seems like an assembly (rather than design) problem to us, since most of our editors haven't had any reception worries and we in fact saw improved performance on that front while conducting our review testing. Spencer himself has decided to buy the phone knowing full well about this potential limitation, and concludes on the note that "sometimes an antenna that's not great, but good enough, is good enough."

Ryan: Apple "the world's biggest technology company"

Apple has pushed past arch-rival Microsoft to become the world's biggest technology company.

Changes in the share price values of the two in Wednesday's choppy trading left the total value of Apple at $222bn (£154bn).

Microsoft is now valued by investors at $219bn.

The worth, known as market capitalisation, is calculated by multiplying the number of shares in a company by the current share price.

Although Apple shares closed down 0.4%, Microsoft fell by 4%.

Apple, which makes computers, iPods, iPhones and now iPads, almost went out of business in the 1990s.

Its growth is partly owing to the launch of the stylish iPod in 2001.

Its compatibility with existing - but not mass-selling - Apple computers lead customers to engage with them, just as Microsoft's products looked set for long-term dominance.

Hey-day

Apple has to look back to late 1989 to see the last time it was ahead of Microsoft.

Microsoft, whose operating system runs on more than 90% of the world's personal computers, has not been able to match growth rates from its hey-day of the 1990s, although its last sales figures were still higher than Apple's.

This week sees the launch in Britain and eight other countries of Apple's iPad tablet computer.

Next month will see the unveiling of the next generation of the iPhone, something that has brought internet access on the move to the mass market, and led to an explosion in downloadable mobile "apps" - applications that enable a huge range of activities, from map reading to booking restaurants.

Ryan: David Cameron take his place as the PM of the UK

Conservative leader David Cameron has become the new UK prime minister after the resignation of Gordon Brown.

Mr Cameron, 43, entered 10 Downing Street after travelling to Buckingham Palace to formally accept the Queen's request to form the next government.

He said he aimed to form a "proper and full coalition" with the Lib Dems to provide "strong, stable government".

His party won the most seats in the general election last week, but not an overall majority.

In a speech outside his new Downing Street home, Mr Cameron said he and Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg would "put aside party differences and work hard for the common good and the national interest".

Ryan: Apple release UK iPad prices

Apple has revealed that the iPad, which will go on sale in the UK on 28 May, will cost £429 for the basic version. Prices go all the way up to £699 for the top of the range 64GB device with both Wi-Fi and 3G network access.

The Californian technology company, which has already seen sales of the iPad sail past the 1m mark after just a month in the shops, will open its website for pre-orders of the device to British gadget fans from Monday next week. Alongside the UK, the tablet computer will also be available on 28 May in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain and Switzerland.

Apple pushed back the international launch of the device last month, citing "surprisingly strong US demand". More than 500,000 were delivered to American retailers and customers in its first week on sale.

In the US, Apple has already sold more than 1m iPads and customers have downloaded more than 12m apps from the App Store, as well as more than 1.5m ebooks from the new iBookstore, Apple added.

In the past, Apple has come in for criticism for the difference between the prices of its products in Europe compared with the US. In the US the basic iPad costs $499, which at the current pound-dollar exchange rate is £338. Apple points out that there are different, and higher, taxes in Europe – the prices it is quoting include VAT – as well as increased transport and other costs.

Apple's price for the 16GB version of the Wi-Fi only iPad is £429 (including VAT) while the 32GB version is £499 and 64GB is £599. For the Wi-Fi and 3G version of the iPad, the 16GB device will be £529 (including VAT), the 32GB device £599 and the largest 64GB Wi-Fi and 3G iPad will be £699.

The corresponding US prices are $499/$599/$699 and $629/$729/$829. There are also numerous peripherals to push up the price: case ($39), keyboard dock ($69), iPad dock ($29), camera connection kit ($29), USB power adapter ($29), VGA adaptor ($29), wireless keyboard ($69), Mobile Me ($69) and AppleCare ($99).

O2, Orange and Vodafone will all be offering mobile data plans for UK consumers who buy the 3G-enabled iPad, but details have yet to be released.

Apple plans to release iPad in Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore in July and will announce availability, local pricing and pre-order plans for these nine additional countries at a later date.

Ryan: Windows 7 the fastest selling OS of all time?

It's hardly been a secret that Windows 7 was on track to become Microsoft's fastest-selling operating system, but the company has just now finally made that designation official, and also revealed that the OS has crossed the magical 100 million licenses sold mark in the process. In other words, that translates to Windows 7 being installed on one in ten of the world's PCs just six months after it launched, which is pretty darn impressive any way you slice it -- or punch it, as the case may be.

Ryan: Will slate computer change the world and what can they do for me?

As the world braces itself for the invasion of the table/slate computer I ask the question “What can they do for me”

Apple, HP, Lenova. MSI, Asus and other players are all ready to bring the Internet to your fingertips though sexy multitouch gesture based slates. With intuitive OS from iPhone OS to Android and not forgetting windows 7, They all try to produce the “magical” experience in a slightly different way but in the end they are all 8-11 inch devices with full touch screen interfaces.

Apple has been the company to create all this hype around these devices but they were not the first to the tablet market, Tablets have been around for years but they have always failed in the past due to clunky full OS which have never worked with touch screens. So what will create the magic this time? It is not what these tablets can do its more how they do it, Internet browsing this not a new thing email has been around for years and mobile computing is and has been available for a long time. But with these devices you can hold the Internet in your hands, browse with a swipe of you finger and not lose screen size.

My term for these devices is “Sofa surfers” convenient ways to enjoy the Internet without the need to get out your laptop or sit in front of your desktop but at the same time getting a better experience than a smart phone. All of these company’s are and will be stretching out imaginations when it comes to mobile computing with great entertainment from movies to games and social networking again delivering the experience in full multitouch.

This sofa surfers will change the way we look at the internet, but don’t be fooled into thinking this is a replacement for your home pc, All of these devices are aimed as an alternative to the poorly build and badly designed netbooks on the market and for me I cant think of anything better.

Ryan: Apple announce iPhone OS 4

Yesterday Apple introduced iPhone OS 4 dev beta, this has been a moment many iPhone users have been looking forward to for some time. Steve Jobs took to the stage and got straight to it.

Introducing over 1500 dev API's and 100 end user features, Steve spent the time explaining 7 key features and today I would like to cover a few of these.

MULTITASKING

Apple have finally introduced this to the iPhone OS, Steve explained that Apple have been working hard on bringing this to the iPhone for sometime but they wanted to do it the right way by creating a method that uses less power.
Steve claimed Apple have done this and done it well, offering the advantage of multitasking without the power problems you get with other phones.

iAD

This is a great concept, Apple offering an advertising channel inside applications. This will mean that more applications can be offered for FREE by being ad supported. But the real story is Apple moving into advertising, Google made the first move by moving into the phone Market and now Apple are hitting back with advertising. Let the battle continue!

MAIL

Apple also introduced a new mail application offering intergrated mailboxes as well as threaded messages.

These changes will be released to the end user this summer and to iPad users in the fall. All new features will be avaliable on the 3GS and iPad but the 3G iPhone will loss multitasking.

If you want to check out all the features see Apples keynote on the iTunes store for FREE
